An earth-bermed home uses soil against one or more exterior walls. The concept can offer shelter, thermal stability and a strong relationship to the site, but it succeeds only when structure, water management and detailing are handled carefully.
First-hand construction experience
Mark Foley has built several earth-bermed homes and lives in one. That experience brings practical attention to the details that determine whether the home remains comfortable and maintainable: how water moves around the site, how walls resist lateral soil pressure, where daylight enters and how the exposed elevations are protected.
Earth berming is not appropriate for every parcel. A successful project begins with topography, soil, drainage, orientation, access and local requirements—not with a stock image of an underground house.

Review slope, drainage, orientation, access and available site documentation.
Decide which elevations are exposed, how rooms receive daylight and how the home connects to grade.
Coordinate structural walls, waterproofing, insulation, drains, openings and roof connections.
Sequence excavation, structure, membrane protection, backfill and exterior drainage without compromising the assembly.
Soil can moderate outdoor temperature swings and provide shelter, but the design also creates higher structural and moisture-management demands. Foley Construction treats those tradeoffs directly so that the project is based on the parcel and construction details rather than broad promises.

Water management is one of the most important concerns, alongside structural design. Drainage, waterproofing, protection and grading must be planned as a continuous system.
A conventional plan may provide ideas, but room orientation, openings, circulation and structural walls usually need to be adapted to the site and bermed condition.
